Apart from structural wood preservation there are a number of different methods and timber treatments that can extend the life of your structural wood, timber and wood structures.
Wood Rot
Dry and wet rot are both fungi which attack and destroy wood for food. Living off of wood in this way allows them to grow and generate spores. Affected timber exhibits significant loss of weight.
The result of wet and dry rot is the deterioration and eventual destruction of the timber with serious consequences in structural sections.
Wet and Dry Rot can affect all types of property, historic or modern. Dampness combined with lack of ventilation can create the ideal conditions for fungal attack.
Dry Wood Rot
Dry rot fungus is the more serious of the two and needs fast specialist action to avoid large scale damage. This fungus is malignant and can spread through thick walls to get to your timber.
Timber affected by dry rot is brown, dry and brittle and can be crumbled by hand.
When dry rot occurs, fine greyish hyphae strands develop from the spore spreading to form a mycelial growth which varies from grey
to white, and can give off millions of spores in the form of red dust.
Wet Wood Rot
Wet Rot is a common cause of structural defects and requires a moisture content of 50 to 60% wet rot is a less serious fungi as it does not spread through masonry and growth ceases when the moisture is removed.
Special low odour micro-emulsion preservationfluids are applied either by spray, brush, or in paste or gel form.
Woodworm
Woodworm holes found in timber are caused by the larvae of beetles that feed on the timber. Larger holes on the surface of the timber are formed when the adult beetle emerges from the timber to mate.
There are a number of species of woodworm, and the precise method of treatment will depend on which species is attacking the timber.
